    Blogging Synthesis

When I read over all of my Intro to Digital Studies blog posts from the semester what I first noticed is that in each post I chose to write about the negative parts of technology such as addiction to technology in my first post or the development of conspiracy theories in my most recent post. This surprised me because as I wrote the posts I did not think that I was being overly pessimistic. I failed to recognize any positive aspects of technology, mostly because the negative side was more interesting to me. For each of my posts, I chose topics that were relevant to what we were studying in…

Why do People Buy into Qanon?

The Qanon conspiracy centers around one individual, who goes by Q and who claims to have access to top-secret information about the government, especially about the Trump Administration. The first posts by “Q” started on the 4chan message board. Since then posts have included conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton, other Democratic politicians and anti-Trump people. In Ben Collins’ ABC News article “What is Qanon? A guide to the conspiracy theory taking hold amount Trump supporters,” Jared Holt, a research associate for Right Wing Watch, says that Qanon gives Trump supporters “a way to explain away any scandal or slip-up the president may face.” Followers of the conspiracy theory can use…

    Hidden Effects of Algorithms

In Zeynep Tufekci’s Ted Talk titled “We’re building a dystopia just to make people click on ads,” she discusses how algorithms that are used to help with advertising on social media and other places online can also be used to control us in ways not commonly considered. For example, Facebook used ads for voting to run an experiment to discover which version of the ad helped attract more voters. The people involved in the experiment were not aware that they were part of it, but it actually had the ability to affect real like events such as presidential elections. The effects of the experiment were real and those involved had…

Trolling: Is it just a Joke?

When I think of trolling on the internet I think of it as a joke, not something serious or present in everyday life. For example, Chrissy Teigen trolling Donald Trump and others on Twitter. Trolling never really seemed like a big deal to me, but the articles “Yelp, The Red Hen, And How All Tech Platforms Are Now Pawns In The Culture War” and “Could Russian trolls have helped elect Donald Trump?” show examples of how trolling can actually have an impact on the world. The Red Hen restaurant got an overwhelming amount of negative attention for asking White House Press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, to leave due to her…

    Kids These Days

My blog post for today does not have anything to do with GIFs, unfortunately. However, I found it relevant to Digital Studies 101 and the constant use of technology that is quickly growing in our society. This past Friday while enjoying my tacos with friends at Sabor in Davidson I was disrupted by a group of children and their parents. It was not just the loud sound of children or their salsa covered hands that disgusted me; it was the electronic glow seen on each of their faces. The seven children were using a total of five iPads and an iPhone while their moms sat across the restaurant chatting. Like most…

    Addiction to Technology

In this section of Feed, the main characters lose their feeds and are left without the constant technology that they have grown so accustomed to. Titus is forced to cope with the sudden lack of stimulation in his head by reading the few pages he “cached” right before his feed stopped, because he has nothing better to do. This experience is something that I think everyone in today’s world can relate to. The boredom of not having anything to do, when not connected to technology. To try to avoid this tragedy we buy portable chargers and download extra Netflix shows before traveling. People feel anxious when they leave their phones at…
